In the year 2021, the Supreme Court has changed the definition of forest. After the new order of the Supreme Court, the definition of forest will be considered according to the Godavarman Thirumulkapad case of 1996. Information about how many forests are there in India is given by the Indian Forest State Report. According to the report released by the Indian Forest State in the year 2021, there is 7,13,789 square kilometer forest area in India. Which is 21.72 percent of the geographical area of the entire country. There was an increase of 1540 square kilometers after the year 2019. But in the last few years there has been a decline in it. Which is a matter of concern. Let us tell you that five types of forests are found in India. Which are called tropical evergreen forests, tropical deciduous forests, tropical thorn forests, mountain forests, swamp forests.
Russia has the largest number of forests
If we talk about the largest number of forests in the world, then it is in Russia. There are more than 815 million hectares of forests in Russia. Which is 45% of the entire area of Russia. Let us talk about the world’s largest forest. So it is in South America. The Amazon Rainforest of South America is spread over about 65 lakh square kilometers. It is also called the lungs of the earth because it produces about 20% of the world’s oxygen. If we talk about India, the maximum number of forests in India is in Madhya Pradesh. Which is spread over 77,462 square kilometers.
